Clutches don’t usually suddenly pack up and stop working. They give the driver indications of when they are starting to fail. Symptoms of impending clutch failure can include:
Symptoms: Severe low frequency vibration.
Cause: Loose or worn engine mountings, misalignment of engine to gearbox, uneven operation of clutch arm, oil contaminated facings, defective pressure plate, defective driven plate, scored or glazed flywheel or worn spigot bearing.
Symptoms: Engine accelerates without giving a corresponding increase in vehicle speed, burning smells, vehicle will not drive up steep hills.
Cause: Incorrect clutch adjustments, partial seizure of linkage or fouling of pedal preventing the full return of the linkage, worn clutch facings, oil contaminated facings, defective pressure plate and/or broken springs, partially seized mechanism.
Symptoms: Difficulty in engaging first gear from neutral without making noise, jolt when changing gear with the vehicle in motion, vehicle moves when pedal is fully depressed.
Cause: Incorrect clutch adjustments or lack of fluid in the hydraulic operating system, worn hydraulic system, oil contaminated facings, defective driven plate, buckled plate or seizure on spines, seized spigot bearing or worn spigot.
Symptoms: A sudden move off of the vehicle though the pedal is gradually released.
Cause: Partial seizure of linkage or fouling of pedal preventing the full return of the linkage, uneven operation of the clutch arm, worn hydraulic system, oil contaminated driven plate, misalignment of engine to gearbox, worn spig bearing.

When your vehicle flywheel is starting to go or has broken up completely there are two ways to go about resolving this problem. You can change the faulty part with a new Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) or you can replace it with a solid conversion kit.
The choice comes down to cost. A DMF could cost you several hundreds of pounds, whereas a conversion kit for the same car may be considerably cheaper.
When you decide to change the clutch or get a flywheel replacement, it may be cost effective to consider changing both. It may take around 5 to 7 hours to replace both clutch and flywheel, depending on which vehicle you may have, but a large amount of this time is taken in dismantling, removing the gearbox and then re-fitting it.
During replacement of the clutch, we check the flywheel for surface cracks, heat discolouring, and wear which may have been caused due to slipping and chatter.
It is common with Dual Mass Flywheels that have severe chatter and play, that they can cause running and starting problems which can lead to possible starter motor damage and further costs. Hence why it is important to resolve these issues before than occur.
Some vehicles are fitted with a concentric slave cylinder, and changing this at the same time can save you money in the long run. It is usually found on the inside of the bell housing on newer vehicles. Replacement of the slave cylinder can sometimes be a major job on its own, depending on the vehicle and location of the slave cylinder therefore it may be wise to replace it when replacing the clutch or flywheel.
